Summary[]

Previously[]

According to Kovich, who lets Dr. Culber in on the problems of interdimensional travel, there is no cure for former Emperor Georgiou, who has traveled both to another time and another universe and therefore increasingly loses cohesion. Culber is not content with this assessment and asks the Discovery's computer for possible help. The computer, which has accumulated the Sphere data, suggests that there is a small chance of success on the planet Dannus V, but without giving any details. Although Saru disapproves of the mission because of the needs of the many in light of the threat posed by the Emerald Chain, Admiral Vance complies with Burnham's wish to take Georgiou to that planet.

In the meantime, Stamets and Adira have completed the decoding of the embedded message from the Verubin nebula. It dates back to the time just before the Burn and comes from the Kelpien Starfleet vessel KSF Khi'eth. On Dannus V, Burnham and Georgiou walk through an ice desert. Suddenly, a door appears, along with a man named Carl who is reading about Philippa Georgiou's death in tomorrow's newspaper. Georgiou steps through the door and finds herself on the ISS Discovery, back in the 22nd century of her universe. It is the day of the christening ceremony of the imperial flagship ISS Charon, the day when Lorca betrayed her with the help of Michael Burnham. Georgiou notices that Saru is among her servants, and she spares his life so he can spy for her. As the christening ceremony ensues, Georgiou unexpectedly kills Stamets for conspiring with Lorca and Burnham. But she decides to spare Michael Burnham...

Conclusion[]

In the Mirror Universe, Emperor Georgiou is determined to alter history. After sparing her life, she continues her efforts to get Michael Burnham to pledge allegiance to her. Burnham finally gives in. Whereas Lorca remains untraceable, she agrees to kill all other co-conspirators. In the meantime, Georgiou has revealed to Saru that his upcoming vahar'ai doesn't mean the end of his life. As the ISS Discovery has intercepted a vessel with a co-conspirator who is still in contact with Lorca, Burnham uses the chance to turn against Georgiou again. But officers who are still loyal to the Emperor, plus Saru and fellow Kelpiens, quickly put down the rebellion. Georgiou is forced to kill Burnham - and wakes up in the 32nd century again.

The whole scenario was a test, arranged by Carl, who reveals to be the Guardian of Forever. After being misused in the Temporal Wars, the Guardian wanted to assure itself of Georgiou's good intentions. After passing the test, Georgiou is sent to a time when the Prime and the Mirror Universe were still aligned. She is officially listed as deceased. On the Discovery, Booker installs an Emerald Chain device that allows to establish a link with the Kelpien vessel inside the Verubin nebula, to Admiral Vance's displeasure.

Errors and Explanations[]

Ex Astris Scientia[]

  1. Bernd Schneider: The frequent glitches in the holographic transmission of Admiral Vance drive me crazy. This is 930 years in the future, but it works less reliably than in the 2150s, before it was decided to get rid of the holograms because they looked like ghosts. Well, the Discovery is a half a galaxy away at this time if I understand correctly, which readily excuses the bad transmission, but if done consequentially there should have been no communication with Federation Headquarters at all! This could be due to excess stress on trying to use the communication equipment for a transmission over greater distances than usual, coupled with possible culmative effects of The Burn on subspace.
  2. Carl makes it sound like he sent Georgiou to another timeline just to test her. So if the Guardian itself creates disposable timelines with real people in them to be messed with just to prevent tampering with the "real" timeline, this is okay? Of course it is! It’s basically the same as using a ‘sandbox’ in computing, ie a testing environment that isolates untested code changes and outright experimentation from the production environment.
